About Northiam DIY
A family legacy established in 1899 originally by Walter Tedham (W.Tedham and son) as a blacksmiths, followed by a wheelwrights manufacturing the renowned Sussex wagons.
The wheelwrights was run but Frank Tedham and his son Derek producing bespoke wagons which became distinguished nationwide. During the mid 1950’s Derek and his wife Margret evolved the business into a small hardware store creating a new space in a corner of the workshop for their new venture selling general ironmongery.
In the late 90’s Jean and Adrian Mowle, Derek’s eldest daughter and then son in law along with their son Rian started to turn the business into the village hub that it is today.
Still trading on the existing site and one of the longest operating businesses in the area which has served the local community for all their hardware needs for over 75 years, Northiam DIY & Garden is now owner-run and led by the families 5th generation, Rian Mowle.
People come from far and wide to enjoy the personal service the business provides, with knowledgeable and friendly staff offering more than 10,000 products specialising in gardening, hardware and general DIY. Giving the consumer a modern yet traditional experience.
For the past 20 years Northiam DIY & Garden has been a member of the buying group Home Hardware, of which Rian has been a Non Executive Director since 2022. This enables the continued offering of vast product selection whilst still maintaining a competitive edge.
